Flying with the Pigs - Marathon Round 2
By: Mark Jacobsen
Oops I did it again...
After last year's Flying Pig monsoon and ensuing pain from the chaffing I wasn't sure I'd ever run another marathon, but apparently I can't just leave well enough alone. I mean, if you've done a full marathon, what's the point in only doing 1/2 of that for roughly the same price? <- Now you know I'm officially crazy :)
Starting somewhat near the beginning I set a goal of running 1-2 marathons this year. As any of you living in the northern part of the country know this year has been a brisk one and I hadn't gotten out much to run. In fact, before the 1st the farthest I had run this year was 16 miles. Still I'm of the opinion that once you do something the 2nd time is usually easier if you've learned from the 1st.
So with that in mind the family and I headed down to Cincinnati to see my sister and brother-in-law, and maybe, just maybe, run the Flying Pig. Naturally Saturday was beautiful and the forecast for Sunday was for more rain so I waffled about signing up until I finally went downtown on Saturday around 4pm in put the money down. Yes, in roughly 12 hours I would be running my 2nd 26.2.
4am started off beautifully at 60 degrees or so and the ride downtown was uneventful. Of course as soon as I park and start getting ready a light mist starts to come down and the wind picked up slightly. I of course took refuge in a port-o-pot to stay warm and dry.
Probably the best decision I made while waiting was that I was going to try and have as much fun as I could this year. I know I'm not a speed demon (as my times below will prove), so I figured I should just try to enjoy doing what so many others are incapable of doing. Naturally, that meant live-tweeting the race. If you follow me on twitter you saw pictures and comments from throughout the race.
A few highlights from the race include...
My phone/mp3 holster breaking around 3 miles and having to run with it in my pocket the rest of the way (thanks to my sister in law for shorts with pockets!).
My 1st ever "in route" bathroom break (seriously people, if you all sat down we wouldn't have the "issues" you see in those things).
Knowing that it's not worth killing yourself on the hills over 26.2 miles and being ok with walking them when necessary.
Stopping at the house I stopped at last year for a change of socks, and having them remember me!
Having, and trusting in the "right" gear including but not limited to SmartWool socks, running roos, RoadID, and of course Body Glide and Aquaphor.
Finishing nearly a 1/2 hour better than last year. Note: the times below are my "official" times, but my total watch time (paused for stops) was 5:22 so I'm going to go with that :)
