Windows 7 Won't Connect to Public WiFi
By: Mark Jacobsen
Have a Windows 7 machine that won't connect to public WiFi? Talk about infuriating to sit down and then not be able to get online. I tried all sorts of things from disabling the firewall and anti-virus to making sure I was an admin and even resetting the adapter.
So how did I finally get online? I added the wireless network manually...
First, find the network connection name then head over to the control panel. Click "Network and Internet". Click "View Network Status and Tasks", then click "Manage wireless networks" (on the left), and "Add" a connection with the name you found in the 1st step. You'll probably want to start with "No authentication" and play around with different values if you have to provide a password.
Doing this got me onto 2 different public WiFi hotspots which I was previously unable to access. If anyone knows why this is I would be happy to hear about it in the comments below. Just seems to be this one computer as I am able to access public wifi no problem from 2 other Windows 7 laptops.
